In the ''busy-ness'' of everyday life it 's very easy to lose momentum of your work outs- the loss can reel from a day to a week and then gloriously extend to months on end! On the other hand regular consistent efforts can bring cumulative gains even over a short period of time.
The key - as in all life's little endeavors is 'consistency'. Consistency, as they say is more important than any talent, intelligence, strength or other advantages one might have (expensive gym membership, latest workout equipment, trendy workout clothes and even the best Fitness Instructor).
I have found four such EASY ways that can help keep workout momentum on your side, so that by being consistent you can make huge gains in your fitness.
1) Make 'working out' a Lifestyle change: If your workouts are linked to a weight loss for a special occasion, etc., then working out can become part of an already uphill struggle!
And as anything in life, this reflects the attitude more than the reality itself. One way of turning this attitude is to turn 'working out' as part of your life.
The biggest advantage of this attitude change is it that you do your workout in line with what is feasible in your life, benefit from a strong body for the rest of your life without going through crash and burn!
Unless working out becomes part of your lifestyle rather than just a fancy- you will find consistency as your biggest challenge rather than your biggest tool!
Therefore incorporate work out plan that can be part of your life for years to come!
2) Make small consistent efforts: Small being the operative word here! I managed to see huge result by doing small (20 minutes a workout, 4 days a week) works out over 4 months and dropping 2 dress sizes - and a breeze!!
And now I apply the same strategy to all the other areas of my life -'Best way to eat an Elephant? One small bite at a time!!
Anyone can tell you if you are working out 2 days a week busting your guts out, leaving the rest of week shying away from your workouts then you might as well not bother!!
Your workouts don't need to be hour long but consistency is the key to not only achieve results but also to maintain them (Maintenance is just as important as getting there in the first place, unless you like stopping and restarting again and again!!)
3) Add Variety: Adding variety is your workout is not only the key to keep interest in your workout regime but also is a sure fire way of seeing continuous improvements in your fitness.
A good bench mark is to change your work outs every 4 weeks- workouts, intensity or both.
This would firstly give you something new to look forward to without getting bored by repeating same work outs week in and week out. Most importantly your body by having to accommodate new and challenging work outs will keep changing for the better.
There is a huge variety of workouts that one can choose from these days limited by one's own imagination and fitness level.
4) Reward Yourself: As most psychologists highlight, most of us human beings are motivated by pain avoidance rather than pleasure seeking! And rewards even though don't make the pain of working out any better (working out becomes quiet pleasing, if you've been doing it for a while!) they do make the whole deal a lot sweeter!
If you can attach 'meaningful' rewards to your work out goals/schedules then you can add another layer of practice that keep will help you be consistent with your workouts.
And consistency is the key to seeing results of any workout regime and enjoying a healthy body!
